Five years after founding CHO-PO, Gardner Wade discovered an ancient statue for sale. He was amazed to learn it was in the image of the Chinese Goddess of the Sea. Her name is Ma Cho Po. For a thousand years mariners have looked to her for safety. Surfers may well have their own immortal goddess protecting them at the world's most dangerous wave, Teahupoo (cho-po).
